SEO Help: Good Website Design for Good SEO.
We already know that building quality content around good keywords is very important for the success of our website, but it doesn?€?t stop there.
Yes, how your website/blog will looks does matter a lot. Why? Simply because it is important to remember that it is not only search engines crawlers that will visit your website, but also and for our main purpose, human visitors.
Alternatively, when designing our site for the human visitors, we should keep in mind that it is the search engines that will index and classify our site. So it is important to keep a broad vision and understanding of each side. Here are my SEO help advices:
When designing for human visitors, the following points are key:
Esthetic - the site must be pleasant for the eyes with a professional look, and not just like a homemade webpage.
Clean - the site must appear structured and easy to navigate, if it looks messy, it?€?s hard to read or focus on the content.
Light weight - the site must load fast. Even though internet is almost all over the world, everybody doesn't have a broadband connection and there's nothing more annoying than a page that takes forever to load.
Aware of those factors, we must also keep in mind the search engines requirements for SEO:
Clean Code - make sure that your html code is conforming to the norm. Not only search engines favors site that are well programmed, in addition it helps to prevent browser display errors, especially when your site is viewed on different browsers. Also keeping a code clean will help you maintain and update your website faster.
Content Transparency - the search engines index your site based on what they can analyze from your content. Unless you're using XML avoid Flash files are they don't allow the search engines to understand your site. Make sure to provide a description on your images too.
Content Quantity - for a site to be listed more often than not, usually 20 pages of content are required at least for SEO. When I say 20 pages of content, I mean real content, each pages should have at least 500 words of unique content.
As talking about the general layout of your website, you should use a fluid framework. Indeed, nowadays, the computer screens come in all shapes and sizes, especially when we consider the wide screens. You can't use fix width anymore or you risk your website to look out of shape either too small or too wide.
As a SEO help tip, the best way is to use CSS to create fluid content that will shape and adjust itself based on each ones browser and monitor.
Be wary of the color theme you choose for your website. Make sure that the colors you selected are in harmony, and keep that theme throughout your website or you may confuse your visitors. Though I could write articles just about color selection for web design and I'd prefer to keep it indeed for another post, there's one point I want to stress, especially for the bloggers:
"If your visitor as expected to read a lot of content on your website/blog, no matter what is your SEO design, you must remember that the easiest way to read is black font on white background."
Failing to do will heavily tire the eyes of your readers and might potentially make you lose them.
Of course, for some short parts, it is acceptable to use your own style sheet but whenever bringing a long text to read, favor black on white; your readers will definitely thank you for it.
Choose a simple template, it's more flexible and light weight, easy to customize and fast to load, balance its simplicity with beautiful gradient images. Provide structured quality content for your readers to enjoy and embellish it with a few light weight pictures (for which you don't forget to add and 'Alt' and 'Title' description).
Try to keep you page size between 5Kb and 10Kb, above that your page may take too long to load, and below that, your page will be considered as irrelevant for SEO because to light, which in search engine optimization means lack of content.
So remember to design for your visitors with the search engines in mind, but that is the subject to another post.
