Understand the basics of SEO

Search Engine Optimization is an art, not a science; however, it still does have a proper methodology. It is important to understand that everything you do in SEO matters, and even more when you do it.

Even today, many people still don't know what search engine optimization is and what it can do for them. Today, internet is probably the most widely used research tool. When people are seeking information, they use a search engine.

To find information on the search engines, people need to define their search query by typing a word or sentence that will help find the related information. In SEO we call this "Keyword" or "Keyword Phrase".

Now, for almost any of those search term you may use, you'll see that there are millions of results! Obviously when searching for information, no matter how dedicated a person is, they don't browse through 15,837,678 results. No, most of them don't look further than the first page of result (that is 1-10), and in some rare occasion, some people will go all the way to the third page (up to result 30).

What does this mean? Simple, if you are not listed in the top 30 results, you simply don't exist.

How can one put itself above millions of competing websites? Does this have anything to do with luck? No, this is where Search Engine Optimization comes into play!

Your ability to fine tune the elements related to your site in order to make them more likely for people to find your information.

What would a top ranking in search engine do for you? Why should you care? Actually it's quite simple, with good SEO, you will:

Increase your popularity and branding. People who know you will find you more easily, and people who don't know you, will get to do so by finding your website.

Increase of income. More visitors means more prospects, more prospects means more sales, more sales means more easy. The math is simple here.
In order to achieve those results, like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, we need to follow a methodology. Like all methodology, SEO needs to be done step by step and in the right order.

Finding the right keywords for your site. There are 3 types of keywords, the "broad terms" usually one word keywords, the "comparison terms" usually 2-4 words, and the "buying terms" usually 4 words and above. I won't elaborate much more here about keywords as we can write books and books about it, but suffice to say that the keyword term you should try to optimize your site for is the "comparison term".

Optimize your pages. Once you have your keywords, you should optimize your webpages. Don't optimize your pages for more than 1-2 keywords per page. Once you have optimized your site for about 20 pages, you can move on to the next step.

Submit your site. Submission to the search engines is done at the end and not in the beginning as most people do! Don't submit your site to the search engines if you don't have at least 20 pages of optimized content in your site, or it will do you more harm than help. Submitting your site is merely an invitation for the search engines crawler to come visit your site and index it. If your site is not SEO ready, you are going to give a very bad impression to the search engines and may be penalized for that.

Link building promotion. Once you finish to submit your website (thing that you do only once by the way, not every now and then) It's time to move on to off-page SEO with your ongoing link building promotion. The links will be pointing towards your site, the higher your page or site will rank in the search engines.
Link building is an ever ongoing process. It needs to be done on a regular basis. Try building 10 new links per day, and you'll do very well. Don't try to build 100 or more links in a day, as this sudden surge of links will affect you more than help you.

It may be hard to understand, but 10 links per day for 10 days are better than 100 links in 1 day. Here's a real life example to help you understand:

Is it the same, or is better to brush your teeth for 3 minutes 3 times per day, or to brush your teeth for 1 hour once a week?

I think you got my point. The same rules apply to search engine optimization.
