Software review: Eudora

Eudora is a more sophisticated email program than Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger. It also is a competitor to Outlook and has some different features. It enables you to have multiple user ID’s, multiple POP3 (inbound) mailboxes, multiple SMTP (outbound) mail servers, filters to move messages into customized folders, and elaborate rules for the filters, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) support, and more.

Modes –– Sponsored, Paid and Light
Sponsored –– default –– full–featured, free.
ADVERTISING SUPPORTED –– I use this!
Paid –– full–featured, no advertising
Light –– no advertising, fewer features, fewer email management tools.

Install gives you an option on where to store the user data folder–– this is a different place than the program folder default: c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora . If you're using Windows XP, Eudora will choose another location automatically. However, you can choose to store it anywhere you like &mdash you make that decision during the program installation.. I like to keep data in a special data directory other than "My Documents."

Recent email viruses and worms, such as the notorious "Melissa" and "I Love You", have heightened many people’s awareness of the need to be careful with email. For maximum protection, we recommend the following:

Change your Eudora attachment directory to something other than the default
Disable JavaScript in your web browser.
Leave "(Warn me when I) Launch a program from a message" checked in Tools/Options/Extra Warnings.
Leave "Allow executables in HTML content" unchecked in Tools/Options/Viewing Mail.
Set up your email account(s) with the New Account wizard OR Skip directly to advanced account setup. You will need to the following: Name, email address, inbound (pop/pop3) mailserver, outbound (smtp) mailserver, and your login name

right click on the user, and select Properties for example, you can choose to leave the mail on the pop server –– use this IF you use multiple email clients, but SET THE DELETE AFTER __ DAYS OPTION if you aren’t clearing it from another program.
Getting Started : CHECK Allow authentication
Checking Mail : CHECK Save Password (if this is a one–person computer)
Checking Mail : SELECT Secure Sockets "If Available, STARTTTLS"
Sending Mail : CHECK Allow authentication (Yahoo will require this about 2/1/02 for security)
Display : UNCHECK "Automatically download HTML graphics" – this is a spam–control issue
Viewing Mail : UNCHECK "Use Microsoft Viewer" (why get any of IE’s security bugs?)
Viewing Mail : UNCHECK "Allow executables in HTML content"
Viewing Mail : Show Messages, CHECK Mark Previewed Messages read, and SET _1_second
Styled Text : CHECK "Send plain text" and "Ask me each time" – don’t be rude, send plain text. People turn off HTML for security reasons.
Getting Attention : UNCHECK "Play a sound"
Background Tasks : SET Wait for _2_ seconds of user inactivity.
Extra Warnings : CHECK –– make sure both "Launch a program" lines are checked
MAPI : CHECK "Warn on MAPI auto–send of messages"
And, finally, as I always suggest for connecting to the Internet, you should run both a firewall program (such as the Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall) and an up–to–date antivirus program (such as Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2009.
