How Does the Windows Registry Work

|

A File Tree

The system registry is a database of essential file references to applications and utilities. It also houses vital system information that is necessary in the functionality of installed hardware and programs. The registry is also key in the installation of new software applications and hardware.

A Reference

The registry is structured with nodes of information that contain keys and sub-keys. When booting up your computer, it references the registry as it confirms the status of currently installed devices and and program files. It also records. The computer references the registry when it loads different profiles and configurations. The registry is constantly updated as new hardware is installed, Windows updates are applied and new applications are installed.

Edits

The registry allows users to edit its values and keys to alter the current configuration. Users can remove lost chains and compact long strings of data to help your computer run more efficiently. Often hardware and application crashes can corrupt files and create missing or invalid registry keys. The addition and removal of hardware or software can orphan keys also. Users can manually access and edit the registry's Explorer-like menu. There are also programs available that can handle registry optimization for you.

Backups

Different versions of Windows handles cloning a stable copy of the registry (for example, XP uses restore points). Backups are used by the computer to revert from an unstable registry to a stable one.
