Windows Vista makes it easy for you to format SD cards. SD cards are typically used in electronic devices such as digital cameras, cell phones and some instruments. Many devices require SD cards to be formatted before they are used the first time. Windows Vista users can also store files on their SD cards for convenient sharing between computers with a media card reader. Most Windows Vista computers already have a pre-installed media card reader.
Step 1 Connect and install a media card reader. Follow the directions with the media card reader's software. You will need a free USB port for installation.
Step 2 Insert the SD card into the card reader.
Step 3 Go to "My Computer" and right click the SD card. The card will be found under "Devices With Removable Storage."
Step 4 Choose "Format."
Step 5 Press "Start" and wait for the format to complete.
