Ubuntu is one of the most user-friendly distributions of linux to date, but one thing it will not do out of the box is play DVD's. This will help you get that started.
Step 1 Open a terminal in ubuntu, and type the following:
sudo apt-get install libdvdread3
It may ask you for your administrator password, just type your user password in.
Step 2 When that is finished running, type:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
Step 3 Try to play the DVD in VLC or Totem movie player. If it does not play, you may need to restart your computer, and go into add/remove programs and download the gstreamer codecs. just do a search for gstreamer, and they all should be there.
