How to Get the Most Out of Windows Vista Speech Recognition

|

Windows Vista has a rather accurate speech recognition software. It is one of the software programs that comes along with the Windows Vista operating system. If you have already upgraded your computer or purchased a new one that is running on Windows Vista, more than likely you already have the software on your computer. Since you already have it, you might as well make the most of it. Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your Windows Vista speech recognition software program.

Step 1 Verify your computer has Windows Vista's speech recognition program. One of the easiest way to find out if it’s equipped with the software is to go to the “Start” menu and type “speech recognition” in the start search box. If your system is equipped with the software, it will display in the “Programs” section before you finish typing.

Step 2 Configure the microphone. Before you spend a lot of time and frustration configuring the microphone, it’s best to purchase a USB headset. While a traditional headset will work with Windows Vista speech recognition software, some folks have problems with the microphone working properly when using the ‘microphone’ input on at the ‘line in’ plug on the computer. You can pick up a USB headset inexpensively on Amazon or at your local electronics retailer. All you have to do is plug it into the USB port and you’re ready to go.

Step 3 Train the software. The first time you use the software, you'll be asked if you would like to train it. Take the time to train the software before you proceed. However, if you’re anxious to use it without training it first, you can always come back and do the training and tutorial. To access the training/tutorial, go to the Start menu and type “speech” in the search box and click on “Speech Recognition Options” as it displays in the programs window.

Step 4 Review the commands. If you become stumped while using the speech recognition software, all you have to do is ask the software “What can I say?” It will display a listing of commands. Spend a little time reading through them so that you will know how to get the most out of the speech recognition software.

Step 5 Speak clearly and with punctuations. The better you enunciate your dictation, the better your results. You'll have to get used to speaking in punctuations. While the software does wonders understanding what you're saying, if you want somebody else to be able to read and understand what you've dictated, you must insert things like periods, commas and new paragraphs.
