How to Use Ubuntu Linux from a Live CD

|

If you have been contemplating trying Linux but don't want to compromise the current contents of your computer then a live CD of Ubuntu may be just the thing you have been looking for. No, a live Ubuntu CD is not a bunch of Linux geeks making music, it is a way to boot the operating system from your CD rom drive. Follow the steps below to get started.

Step 1 Make sure your boot order starts at the CD rom drive. Most computers have this option selected by default.

Step 2 Place the CD into your drive, close, and turn on or reboot your computer.

Step 3 A graphic should open with a few options. Choose the one that says Start or Run Ubuntu. Don't fret, you aren't changing your hard drive!

Step 4 Once the clean, crisp Ubuntu is loaded, browse around and try some of the applications. Of particular interest is Open Office. If you have never tried this suite, it is very similar to MS Office. You can even save your documents in the same format as the MS versions.

Step 5 If you wish to completely install Ubuntu, click on the install icon on the desktop. This will walk you through the process including the partition manager. The partition manager allows you to completely remove windows or to set up a dual boot environment.

Step 6 Have fun. This operating system and all its associated programs are available free of charge.

Step 7 When you are ready to shut down, simply locate the icon on the task bar and follow the instructions. The next time you start your computer, it will be in the same condition as before your trial run of Linux.
