The command prompt is a feature built in to the Windows XP and Vista operating systems. Computer users with higher levels of technical knowledge use the command prompt to access network information and change different system properties. However, after typing lots of commands into the program, the command prompt window can become cluttered, so it is important to know how to clear the screen.
Step 1 Open the Start menu by clicking on the icon in the lower-left corner.
Step 2 Click on the "Run" icon at the bottom of the Start menu.
Step 3 Type "cmd" into the pop-up window and then press the "Enter" key. The command prompt window will now open.
Step 4 Type any standard commands into the blank window.
Step 5 Type "cls" and then press the "Enter" key. This is the clear command, and when it is entered, all of your previous commands in the window will be cleared.
