A Windows Vista-based computer will not automatically recognize a Yahoo DSL connection when the hardware is plugged in. Some manual configuration is needed before the connection will be usable. The software on the setup CD included in the Yahoo DSL installation kit contains the utilities needed to properly configure Windows Vista. You will also need your unique username and password before beginning. Depending on how you signed up, this was either given to you over the phone, or you were sent instructions on how to create your user account when you signed up for the service.
Step 1 Ensure the DSL modem is connected properly according to its included instruction booklet. It should be connected to a network or USB port on the computer, and also to a phone line equipped with one of the included line filters. The "Internet" and "Network" or "LAN" light on the front of the modem should illuminate, confirming the connections have been properly made.
Step 2 Insert the software setup CD into the computer's disk drive, and close the tray. Give it a moment to initialize, and the installer will automatically appear on your screen. You must accept a Terms of Service Agreement to begin. Along the way, you will be prompted for your login credentials that were created earlier. It may take up to 30 minutes for the installation to complete, depending on the computer.
Step 3 Allow the installer to reboot Windows Vista when it has finished configuring the connection. Test the connection by opening a web browser and visiting any website. The computer should now have full access to the Internet.
