How to Measure for New Double Hung Windows

|

Double-hung windows are smart upgrades for your home. They not only look great, but have easy cleaning features and are energy efficient. You won't maximize your energy efficiency, however, if you don't take precise measurements for your new double-hung windows.

Step 1 Draw a rough sketch of your window---it doesn't have to be to scale but should be large enough for you to fill in measurements.

Step 2 Measure the height of your existing windows, beginning at the bottom of the left overhead jamb down to the top of the sill. Take the same measurements in the middle and the far right, filling in each measurement on your window sketch. Highlight the shortest height.

Step 3 Measure the width, from left to right between the insides of the window jamb, beginning at the top. Repeat in the middle and the bottom, noting these measurements on your sketch. Highlight the lowest number.

Step 4 Take your two highlighted measurements to your local window seller or home improvement store to purchase correctly measured double-hung windows that will fit in your space and maximize your energy efficiency.
